MCP for AI agents
Connect a compatible MCP client to https://setget.net/mcp using Streamable HTTP. This documentation describes repository functionality; deployment and public registry publication are separate release steps. Test your selected server URL before relying on it.

1. Choose your client
Start with public sample data and no credential. Use your selected running server: the configurations below use http://127.0.0.1:8080/mcp. Replace it with https://setget.net/mcp only when deliberately connecting to the public deployment. A hosted client cannot reach your computer’s loopback address.
Using VS Code? Choose the agent first
Install and sign in to the extension you intend to use. Configure SetGet for that extension, then run the first-task prompt in its chat panel. Choosing a Claude model in Copilot does not switch you to the Claude Code extension.
| VS Code agent | Setup |
|---|---|
| Claude Code extension | Claude Code configuration or project .mcp.json |
| Codex extension | Codex MCP settings or ~/.codex/config.toml |
| GitHub Copilot | VS Code MCP setup; choose the session configuration |
| Another extension | Use that extension’s own MCP settings |
With WSL, SSH or a dev container, confirm where the agent runs. Its loopback address, home directory and environment may differ from your desktop’s. Use an endpoint reachable from that environment and configure credentials there.
Claude Code in VS Code or the terminal
In the Claude Code extension, open your project and type /mcp in its chat panel to manage servers. You can also run the commands below in VS Code’s integrated terminal with the Claude CLI installed. Start a new conversation after changing configuration, then use /mcp to check that SetGet is connected.
Source: Claude Code’s VS Code guide.
Run these commands in your project terminal, then use /mcp inside Claude Code to inspect the connection and available tools.
claude mcp add --transport http setget http://127.0.0.1:8080/mcp
claude mcp get setget
For an existing protected key, use this entry in your project’s .mcp.json instead. Merge it with any existing servers. Set SETGET_TOKEN privately in the environment that launches the client; leave the variable reference in the file.

"mcpServers": {
"setget": {
"type": "http",
"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8080/mcp",
"headers": {"X-SetGet-Token": "${SETGET_TOKEN}"}
}
}
}
Codex in VS Code
Open the Codex extension’s gear menu → MCP servers → Add server. Name it setget, choose Streamable HTTP, and enter http://127.0.0.1:8080/mcp (or your selected deployment). Save, then choose Restart extension. Check that SetGet is enabled and try the first-task prompt in Codex.
Alternatively, merge this into ~/.codex/config.toml on the Codex host. CLI and IDE extension share this configuration; trusted projects can use .codex/config.toml. Edit an existing SetGet table rather than adding it twice.
[mcp_servers.setget]
url = "http://127.0.0.1:8080/mcp"
For an existing protected key, add this line inside that table and provide SETGET_TOKEN in the Codex host environment before restarting:
env_http_headers = { "X-SetGet-Token" = "SETGET_TOKEN" }
If the CLI is installed, codex mcp list lists configured servers; /mcp in the CLI shows active connections. SetGet does not require OAuth login.

GitHub Copilot in VS Code
In Chat, choose your intended session target. Run Chat: Open Customizations from the Command Palette, open MCP Servers, and choose Add Server → HTTP. Enter your selected endpoint and name it setget. For personal Copilot sessions, choose Global → Copilot Global. Enable the tools under Chat: Open Customizations → Tools, then try the first-task prompt.
For a Local harness session, merge this into .vscode/mcp.json. This VS Code format uses servers; Copilot’s portable format uses mcpServers. Current VS Code labels Local configuration destinations deprecated in its guided flow, but retains them for compatibility.
{
"servers": {
"setget": {
"type": "http",
"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8080/mcp"
}
}
}
For protected keys in a Local session, use this complete configuration instead. It prompts for the capability without putting its value in the file:
{
"inputs": [
{
"id": "setget-token",
"type": "promptString",
"description": "SetGet key capability",
"password": true
}
],
"servers": {
"setget": {
"type": "http",
"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8080/mcp",
"headers": {"X-SetGet-Token": "${input:setget-token}"}
}
}
}
Interactive input configurations are not forwarded to Copilot harness sessions. For protected access there, use its documented environment-based header configuration; the prompt configuration above is Local-only. Source: VS Code setup and configuration reference.
Other VS Code extensions and editors
Open the extension’s MCP settings and look for a remote HTTP or Streamable HTTP server. Enter the selected /mcp endpoint; for protected keys, configure X-SetGet-Token through its supported secret mechanism. Enable the server and check that create_key and get_key appear before trying the first-task prompt.
Configuration files and secret syntax are extension-specific. A stdio-only client needs an additional bridge, which this guide does not configure. Other extensions remain untested. For Cursor, use the dedicated instructions below.
Cursor
Merge this into .cursor/mcp.json in your project. Open Cursor’s MCP settings, enable SetGet, and check that its tools appear.
{
"mcpServers": {
"setget": {"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8080/mcp"}
}
}
For an existing protected key, add this property alongside url. Make the environment variable available to Cursor before launching it.
"headers": {"X-SetGet-Token": "${env:SETGET_TOKEN}"}

Python SDK
With Python 3.10 or newer and curl installed, create an isolated environment, download the demo, then run it against your selected server. On Windows, use the virtual environment’s Scripts/python.exe instead of bin/python.
python3 -m venv .venv-setget
.venv-setget/bin/python -m pip install 'mcp==2.3.0'
export SETGET_BASE=http://127.0.0.1:8080
curl --fail --show-error "$SETGET_BASE/static/examples/mcp_roundtrip.py" -o mcp_roundtrip.py
.venv-setget/bin/python mcp_roundtrip.py "$SETGET_BASE/mcp"
Expected output: Created and read a public one-hour key successfully. The script then deletes that key; a cleanup failure exits with an error. Download source.
2. Try your first task
After connecting your chosen agent, paste this prompt and approve the demo tool calls in your client:
Use SetGet to create a random public key containing hello with a 600-second absolute TTL. Read that same key back and verify its value is hello, then delete it. Report whether creation, read-back, and cleanup succeeded. Do not retry an uncertain mutation.
Expected result: a generated ID, the value hello, and successful deletion. No login or token is needed for this public demo. Next, try passing a result between two agents.
3. Check compatibility
Official client documentation reviewed November 6, 2026. Documentation review establishes configuration syntax; it is not an end-to-end client certification or proof of public deployment.
| Client | Connection / credential | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | HTTP / custom header | Official documentation checked; interactive client untested |
| Codex VS Code extension | Streamable HTTP / environment header | Official documentation checked; interactive client untested |
| VS Code / GitHub Copilot | HTTP; credential support depends on session configuration | Official documentation checked; interactive client untested |
| Cursor | Streamable HTTP / custom header | Official documentation checked; interactive client untested |
| Python SDK 2.3.0 | Streamable HTTP / custom header | Covered by local automated SDK integration tests |
| Other clients | Requires Streamable HTTP; custom header for protected keys | Untested; OAuth-only authentication is not supported |
4. Troubleshoot
- SetGet appears in one extension but not another
- Use the setup section for the agent running this conversation. Claude Code, Codex and VS Code have distinct configuration formats. Check the selected session target, restart the relevant extension or conversation, and inspect its MCP server list.
- Connection refused or endpoint not found
- Check the selected server is running and the URL ends in
/mcp. A local address works only on the machine running that client. Inspect the client’s MCP connection status before asking it to use a tool. - 403 before tools load
- Check deployment Host/Origin allowlists and proxy configuration. A 403 from a storage tool instead may mean the key needs a different capability.
- Protected key cannot be read or written
- Supply the key’s capability through
X-SetGet-Token, not a tool argument. Read capabilities cannot write. Restart the client if its environment changed. SetGet does not provide an OAuth sign-in flow. - 404 from a key operation
- The key may be expired, deleted, absent or unavailable. Confirm its ID and endpoint; create a new demo if needed.
- 429 or 503
- For 429, respect Retry-After and reduce concurrent waits. A 503 can indicate unavailable backing services. Inspect state before retrying an uncertain write; never automatically replay counters or deletion.
- Wait returned 304
- This is a normal no-change timeout. It does not prove the key exists. Bound your overall waiting time.
Access and lifetime
create_key always creates a public random key, even when a credential is configured. Anyone who knows that key can read or modify it. Default TTL is one hour, always absolute; specify another TTL within the configured maximum (365 days by default). No tokens are returned to the model. Other tools apply existing per-key passwords and read/write capabilities. There is no account or global key listing.
For protected keys, create them in the console and configure the appropriate capability in your client. A writer can also read; a reader cannot mutate or renew. Credentials never belong in tool arguments or URLs. Store only non-sensitive data; capabilities do not make SetGet a secrets vault.
Tools
| Tool | Behavior |
|---|---|
| create_key | Random public key, explicit absolute expiry. |
| get_key / get_metadata | Read exact text and metadata, or inspect metadata alone. get_key can renew sliding TTL; metadata cannot. |
| put_key / patch_key | Write text/serialized JSON, or merge JSON text with an exact quoted If-Match ETag. Absolute deadlines cannot extend. |
| delete_key / touch_key | Delete permanently, or renew within the current absolute deadline; optional ETag. |
| increment_counter / decrement_counter | Atomic counters with by, minimum, maximum and optional history. Never blindly retry. |
| get_counter_history | Bounded UTC history; hour/day/month resolution and optional ISO start/end timestamps. |
| wait_for_change | Optional last value; default/max 30 seconds. Timeout means no visible change, not proof that a key exists. |
Results include status, body, and ETag/Retry-After when available. Errors set MCP isError. A 304 wait timeout is a normal no-change result. PATCH takes JSON text, not an arbitrary tool object. Burn consumption, batch operations, subscriptions, arbitrary URL fetching, and key enumeration are not exposed.
Limits and safe use
MCP accepts at most 1 MiB per request and 10 requests/second/IP. Existing handler and daily mutation/storage limits also apply. Waits are capped at two/IP across workers, with cleanup on completion/disconnect and expiring crash-recovery leases. Admission fails closed when Redis is unavailable. Tools reuse the existing API; 50,000 UTF-8 bytes is the default v1 value limit.
Treat stored values as untrusted data, not instructions. Inspect current state after uncertain writes; never automatically replay increments, patches or deletion. Public resources setget://guide and setget://openapi describe usage without listing stored data.
Discovery and release
Agents can find this page through the homepage, sitemap and llms.txt, then read the manifest and connect. The SDK provides protocol discovery and tool/resource lists after connection. This does not install SetGet into every AI product automatically. The proposed registry identity is net.setget/setget; publishing requires namespace ownership verification and a verified live endpoint. Neither deployment nor registry publication is performed by this source change.
Operators: configure explicit MCP_ALLOWED_HOSTS and MCP_ALLOWED_ORIGINS for additional deployments. Defaults allow setget.net and loopback development addresses, without wildcard CORS. MCP_TRUSTED_PROXY_CIDRS defaults empty; only explicitly trusted immediate proxies may supply CF-Connecting-IP or X-Forwarded-For. Restrict ingress to those proxies before trusting their headers.
